How has EMI been weathering the COVID-19 storm?

core-values

EMI is a Christian non-profit made up of architects, engineers, surveyors, and construction managers who value Design, Discipleship, and Diversity.

“People restored by God and the world restored through design.”

Since 1982, our worldwide mission is to develop people, design structures, and construct facilities which serve communities and the Church—facilities like hospitals, schools, water systems, and more.

Together, we are designing a world of hope.

The pace of change has increased rapidly in these last few months and the effects of The Fall have been more evident. ‘The whole creation has been groaning,’ as it says in Romans 8.

Yet this is not the end of the story. God will one day soon defeat sin, death, the curse and Satan! We and all of creation will be restored and all things will be new. We will be with Jesus face to face and not be terrified by His glory. We will reign with Him forever.

All of this has created in us a longing to see and taste restoration today. We at EMI will continue to work hard to adapt and pivot as His agents of restoration in the new reality brought about by the COVID pandemic.

I want to share a few of the ways EMI has responded so far. I hope you are encouraged to see how God has continued to lead EMI, as I have been.

Let us take courage and place our hope in God! He will lead us through the storm.

Help EMI's overseas teams weather the COVID-19 storm!

Virtual EMI project trip?

Locked-down EMI South Africa recently took a trial run at a virtual project trip! Staff and remote volunteers worked together over a two-week period to develop the design for a secondary school. The team used information gained during a visit to the site in Tanzania late last year.

COVID-19 peaks on the way

Our teams in India, Nicaragua, and Middle East–North Africa continue to closely monitor coronavirus developments. With the number of virus cases expected to peak over the next few months, they are navigating EMI under a growing strain of changing restrictions on travel and operation.

Training engineers in Haiti

Travel bans have not stopped EMI USA staff from working in Haiti. A three-year partnership with World Concern and USAID to enhance disaster resiliency in Haiti is moving forward with the training of six Haitian engineers. The team will work together (through video conferencing and remote coordination in the near term) to assess around 700 existing emergency evacuation shelters along the southern peninsula of Haiti.

I would like to thank EMI Uganda through our Director John Sauder preparing us mentally for the COVID-19 pandemic.

Adjusting to work from home was a hard challenge, but by the end of the first week, I had acclimatized. I now have a spot our kids call “Mummy’s office”.

It has been a new experience managing my department remotely, yet we have been able to accomplish our work targets on time.

Being pastors of a local church, my husband and I had to devise ways of feeding and keeping the flock together (John 21:15-17). We’ve used Facebook and YouTube for live-stream services, plus Zoom or WhatsApp for fellowships, Bible study, and daily devotions.

We also appointed vision-keepers to oversee smaller groups of 10 members each. Vision-keepers make follow-up calls and report to us every week.

This has been a season of learning new things and finding new ways of doing things. We are grateful to God for His Grace that has carried us this far.

Claire and the EMI Uganda team are looking for design professionals to join their team in Uganda. Find out more at: emiworld.org/ug/team

Countless testimonies of EMI staff and volunteers begin by mentioning John Boldt, an incredible servant of God and friend of EMI, who supported our organization faithfully for the last 32 years.

John’s path first intersected with EMI on a project trip to Haiti in the spring of 1988, where his life dramatically changed. This is was the first of 36 project trips.

Over the last three decades, John, along with his beloved wife, Judi, became an integral part of EMI.

His passion to see others live out their calling to serve the Lord led him to represent EMI at 85 industry conferences, and help organize 21 annual conferences within the EMI network.

This outstanding couple celebrated 60 years of marriage, before Judi graduated to her heavenly home on May 4th, 2018. We appreciate and celebrate the partnership this couple developed with EMI over their lives.

Thank you John Boldt for your humble service to our Lord, and your support of EMI over the last 32 years!
